Walter W. “Butch” Volkers, age 64, of Sweet Home passed away Monday at his home. He was born in West Terre Haute, Indiana to Ernie and Katherine (Ellingsworth) Volkers. He attended schools in Arizona.

Walter enlisted in the US Army, serving in Vietnam as a demolition enginer. In 1981, he married Dorothy Zivello in Reno, California. They moved to Sweet Home, and he has been here ever since. He worked as a police officer for 12 years, tended bar at many locations in the Sweet Home area, and managed bars and restaurants. Walter was a previous Commander for the VFW post here in Sweet Home in 1988 and 1989. Some of his favorite activities include going to Casinos, playing video poker and cribbage, fishing and hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Walter is survived by sons: Skip of Tulare, California, Andy of Sweet Home, and Tony Zivello of Arizona; a daughter, Alicia Volkers, of Sweet Home; five brothers: Ed, Phillip, and Marv, all of Sweet Home, Andrew of Libby, Montana, and John of New Jersey; three sisters: Ernestine Kelley of Orlando, Florida, Mary Anna Fry of San Antonio, Texas, and Ruth Hefner of Moline, Illinois; and six grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by two brothers: Lawrence and Jerome.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to St. Helen’s Catholic Church Food Bank.
