Texas Lee Driggs, 76, passed away March 4, 2007, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon from a cancer that struck suddenly and, mercifully, released her quickly.

Born August 18, 1930 to Capt. Henry Andrew and Irma Matthews Lee, in Boston, Massachusetts, Texas was the older sister to three brothers.

After finishing school in Reading, Mass., she moved to Portland, Oregon, where she married William C. Hiscoe, Jr., in 1948. They had two sons, Steven and Daniel. The couple was later divorced.

She began working at First National Bank in Portland, where she met Donald Orlo Driggs, a fellow employee. They married in 1957, and the family moved to Salem, where Texas had another son, Jeffrey. Later they moved to Keizer, for a few years, before moving to Sweet Home, Oregon in 1968, where Don was the manager of First National Bank; later Wells Fargo.

Texas was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, and was a member of the Altar Guild of St. Timothy’s in Salem and of St. Francis in Sweet Home, where she also assisted with the “Dining with Daisy” program through Sweet Home Emergency Ministries. She served as the church treasurer for the past 24 years, relinquishing her duties only the week before she died. Texas led a life devoted to serving others, and was a dedicated volunteer for many programs.

In Salem she volunteered as a candy striper at Salem General Hospital and as a handicapper for the McNary Women’s Golf Association. In Sweet Home she was a classroom volunteer for many years at Oak Heights Elementary School, an election supervisor, and a driver for ten years with the Oregon Department of Human Resources, transporting disadvantaged children and adults to medical and therapy appointments around the valley.

Other than her work with her church, Texas is perhaps best known for her efforts for the American Red Cross, scheduling appointments for blood drives and assisting with the check-in of donors. She herself donated more than 16 ½ gallons of blood over her lifetime.

In earlier years a golfer and a bowler, Texas continued to enjoy playing bridge regularly with her close friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don, and her brother, Richard, Texas is survived by brothers, David Lee of South Bridgton, ME, and Dexter Lee of Swan’s Island, ME; sons, Steven (Sue) Hiscoe of Portland, OR, Daniel (Lorraine) Hiscoe of Gaston, OR, Jeffrey (Jane) Driggs of Lehi, UT; companion, Karl Proctor of Sweet Home; grandchildren, Timothy (Geri) Hiscoe, Becky (Felix) Sanchez, Jessica Gale, Courtland Driggs, and Chandler Driggs; and great-grandchildren Christian, Julia, and Desmond.

A memorial service for Texas will be held Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 341 8th Ave, Sweet Home. Interment will be at Gilliland Cemetery at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Francis Memorial Fund. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
