Shirley Jane Royer, 83, of Sweet Home, Oregon went to be with her Lord Saturday, April 8, at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Albany. She was born in Ventura, California to Francis Clayton and Violet (Nafe) Hagle.

As a young child, Shirley lived in Price Creek, California. In 1944, at the age of 11, her family moved to Sweet Home.

Shirley married Chester Orval Royer on October 22, 1950 in Foster. They had four children: Jerry, Gordon, Laura, and David.

Shirley worked for Guy and Naomi Babcock as a row boss in the bean fields before going to work at Sweet Home Bookkeeping in 1961 for Barbara Musgrave. She bought the business in 1974 from Barbara (Musgrave) Norquist, and then sold it in 1996 to Gregory J. Beisner, CPA. Because of her caring nature, she would go to the homes of her elderly and homebound clients to prepare their tax returns. She would also prepare returns at no charge for deployed military personnel to thank them for their service to our country.

Shirley attended the Evangelical Church for 58 years. She was church treasurer for seven years, taught Sunday school, was on the church council, and helped in the nursery. She contributed to the HOPE Center by painting and serving as treasurer for a while.

She is survived by her children: Jerry and wife Charlene of Salem, Gordon and wife Dawn of Springfield, Laura Killian of Foster, and David and wife Toy of Sweet Home; sister Phyllis and husband Ken Brooks of Arizona; sister-in-law Louella Townsend of Lebanon; brother-in-law Arthur Royer of Scio; nine grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Chester; parents Frank and Violet Hagle; grandson Luke Royer; sister Alice VanHoutan; brother Alan Hagle whom she raised from the age of nine; and a baby brother who died at birth.

A Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 24, at Sweet Home Evangelical Church. A potluck will follow the services.

Donations can be made in Shirley’s name to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice to whom we owe so much; 1046 Sixth Avenue, Albany, Oregon 97321.
