Orville Nichol, 92, of Sweet Home passed away Tuesday, March 31, from complications of COPD.

He was born in Logan, Kansas to James and Grace (Booth) Nichol. He grew up during the dust bowl, which contributed to his health complications later in life.

Orville worked in the CCC camps instead of enlisting, because he was the last son at home to ensure the Nichol name.

He loved his gospel and country music, which gave him many hours of entertainment.

Although only finishing the eighth grade, he was a great carpenter. He remodeled his home, as well as many other homes in the area.

Orville was the cornerstone of his family, raising six children while working usually two jobs (one as a mill worker and the other as a millwright). His friends at work always called him Nick.

He is survived by: his children, Diana Eberhard and husband Ken of Elgin, Orviletta, James and husband J.C. of Sweet Home, Pam Severns and husband Greg of Sweet Home, Michelle Graham of Sweet Home, Jim Nichol and wife Carol of Sweet Home; daughter-in-law Carol Nichol of Sweet Home; niece Judy Smith and husband Jerry of April Crossing, Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He would have met his first great-great grandson in July.

Orville was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lucille Nichol, and his first son, Michael Eugene Nichol.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2015 at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Gilliland Cemetery.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
