Janice Marchant Stewart, daughter of the late Ernest Wright Marchant and Helen (Carleton) Marchant Snow, was born October 24, 1934, in Lovell, Wyoming. She attended public schools in Wyoming, California, and Utah, and graduated from Springville High School in 1952 in Springville, Utah, while living in nearby Mapleton, Utah. After graduation, she attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she met her eternal cowboy sweetheart, Solomon Lan Stewart. They were married in the LDS Mesa Arizona Temple on January 16, 1953, and went on to raise a family of five children.
In addition to taking wonderful care of her family, Janice loved raising and training horses, teaching music (piano, organ and singing), sewing and designing clothes, the French language, and her beloved home state of Wyoming. She was a horse owner from the age of 15 until her last one died when she was 88 years old. She lived at the property where she died for 48 years and the story is told that she didn’t even look at the house when they bought the property – she only looked at the barn and because the barn suited her, she said yes to the property as a whole. She was also an avid gardener and for decades stocked her shelves and fed her family with food that she had grown and preserved herself. She will always be remembered as a classy, beautiful, spectacularly-fashionable, and very talented woman.
Janice left this life on Friday, February 7, 2025, just a few months after her 90th birthday. She was healthy in mind and body until her last day. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, and several half-siblings.
Janice is survived by four children: Lan M. (Janice) Stewart of Reno, Texas; Sylvia Christiansen of Aztec, New Mexico; Bret (Debra) Stewart of Lebanon, Oregon, and Jay (Nancy) Stewart of Lebanon, Oregon. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, 1 (almost 2!) great-great grandchildren, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
