Ewell Hayden Davenport, Sr., age 97, of Sweet Home passed away Tuesday evening. He was born in Asher, Arkansas to Virgle Roscoe and Mary M. “Mollie” (Wheeler) Davenport.

Hayden moved from Arkansas to San Antonio, Texas in 1937. He returned to Arkansas in 1939, and in 1941 moved to Vernonia, Oregon. He grew up on a farm and worked on dairy farms in Texas and Newport, Oregon.

Hayden eventually settled in Sweet Home in 1946. He started logging as a timber feller in Vernonia and followed that line of work until his retirement in 1977. He spent many years working as a team with his brother, Harvey Davenport. He worked for Kellenberger Logging, Murphy Logging, Rose Logging, and Willamette Industries, from which he retired. He was a member of the AFLCIO and United Woodworkers Union of America.

Hayden liked hunting, gardening, and maintaining his car and truck. Most of all, he enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives.

Hayden is survived by: his daughter, Joy Claborn (John) of Sweet Home; son, Ewell (Debra) of Albany; granddaughters, Kirsten Savage of Sweet Home and Kelsey Jennings of Albany; grandsons, Todd Claborn of Sweet Home and Ethan Davenport of Portland; six great grandchildren; sisters, Gennie Koury of Rancho Cucamonga, CA., Mary McChristian and Lucy Wideman of Blackwell, OK, and Opal Glenn of Elkins, AR; and brothers, Tom Davenport of Fayetteville, AR and Albert Davenport of Lebanon, OR.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Mildred Lora; daughter, Laquita; parents, Roscoe and Mollie; sister, Iva Gardner; and brothers, Raymond, Harvey, Otis, and Truman.
