Doris Lillian Slater folded her earthly tent and went to heaven on March 26, 2011. Twins Doris and Dorothy were the 10th and 11th of 16 children of Otto and Pearl Slater. They were born at home on Fern Hill near Foster.

Doris attended Fern Hill and Sunnyside Schools. She graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1946.

Doris worked at Eastern Washington College of Education as a cook for six years. Later, she attended Merritt Davis Business College in Salem. She became an employee at Cookes Stationery Store in Salem and worked as a bookkeeper for fifty years. Because of health issues, Doris was forced to retire at the age of 82. She then moved to Crawfordsville to live with family.

She never married, but was the special fun-loving, nurturing aunt to all her nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Christian Church in Salem and later attended Marcola Christian Church.

Doris is survived by: her brother, Caryl Slater of LaPine; and sisters, Shirley Anderson of Sitka, Alaska, Gertie Nye of Prineville, and Jean Robinson and Gayle Thomas of Crawfordsville.

Evergreen Hospice made it possible for Doris to remain at home until her passing. The family greatly appreciates them and the help of Norma, a special friend.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., April 7, at Marcola Christian Church. Private burial will follow at Gilliland Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.
