To honor her request, no service will be held at this time. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Violet Crystal Northern, 101, of Brownsville passed away Saturday at home with family by her side. She was born on the family farm in Lacomb, the daughter of Ora and Elva (Deakins) Powell.
Violet was raised in Lacomb and attended Salt Lake Grade School. Joab Powell, the well known Baptist circuit rider who built Providence Church in Lacomb was her great-great grandfather. Many of her ancestors were active in county and local government.
On June 30, 1937, she married Elvin Leo Northern. They resided on their ranch four miles east of Brownsville where they raised cattle and hay.
Violet liked cooking and always had pies made for family and friends to enjoy. Her yard reflected the love she had for flowers and gardening.
For many years, she was a member of Brownsville Garden Club. She won numerous ribbons for her entries in flower shows. Many quilts and scrapbooks were made by her for family and others. She made beautiful pine needle baskets and enjoyed oil painting. In her later years, she did needlework and spent time doing jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by: her son, Larry Northern and wife Mary of Brownsville; daughter, Judy Whitfield and husband Turner of Brownsville; sisters, Wanda Gray of Lacomb and Aloha Cannon of Portland; grandchildren, Angie Burton of Albany, Greta Hastings and husband Steve of Corvallis, Brent Burton and wife Jenny of Lacomb, Larry Northern, Jr., and wife Holly of Brownsville, Monica Isom and husband Jason of Brownsville, and Cody Northern and wife Courtney of Brownsville; 16 great grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
Violet is preceded in death by: her husband, Elvin, in 1975; brothers, Ronald “Bud”, Vernon, and Zanol Powell; and sisters, Marie Schrick, Marguerite “Maggie” Turnidge, and Henrietta Harold.
To honor her request, no service will be held at this time. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.
