Martin Phillip Smith, or “MIKE,” as most knew him, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 28, 2016. He was born in Decatur, Iowa to Phillip and Alice L. (Lewis) Smith.

He married Geraldine Rowley Hegge on January 19, 1985. Geraldine’s kids provided a shotgun wedding that he talked about for years.

Mike worked for Willamette Industries for 40 years as a debarker. He was a member of Crawfordsville Community Church.

His hobbies included restoring old classic cars, tinkering, and traveling. He made it to all 50 states, Mexico, and Canada. The family knew he was happy when he was whistling.

Mike is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children James Dean and wife Sharon, Celinda Gorley, Paula Rogers, LeRoy Hegge and wife Karen, Mike Hegge, Beth Blackwell and husband Ron, Sharon Wall and husband Tom, Sandi Hegge, Casper Hegge and wife Heidi. Mike had oodles of grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren, and more on the way. He has three brothers and a sister; Harvey Smith, James Smith, Doris Holden, Bill Smith.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Scott Hegge; sisters Nelda Nostsger and Shirley Smith; parents Phillip and Alice Smith; and his first wife, Janice Smith.

His memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, at Crawfordsville Community Church.
