Hildegarde Thums, 99, of Sweet Home passed away Friday, December 13, 2024. She was born on April 6, 1925 to James and Amalie (Linsmeier) Thums in Rib Lake, Wisconsin.

Hildegarde spent her school years in Oregon. Her life was shaped by the extraordinary events of her time, including the trials and triumphs of World War II. These experiences instilled in her a resilience and strength that defined her character throughout her 99 remarkable years.

In 1958, Hildegarde made her way to California, where she made a home in the Bay Area and became deeply rooted in the Half Moon Bay community until her relocation in 2019 back to Sweet Home. Her love for the region was matched only by her passion for gardening, which brought her immense joy and served as a symbol of her nurturing spirit.
Hildegarde’s contributions to her community were profound. She was a dedicated member of the Young Ladies Institute and a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of the Pillar Church in Half Moon Bay, where she generously volunteered her time and talents. Her unwavering support for these organizations reflected her commitment to uplifting others and making the world a better place.

Hildegarde had an insatiable curiosity about the world, which fueled her love of international travel. Whether exploring distant countries or immersing herself in new cultures, she cherished the opportunity to broaden her horizons and connect with people from all walks of life. Her travels brought her immense joy and countless stories, which she delighted in sharing with family and friends, inspiring them to see the beauty and diversity of the world.
To her family, Hildegarde was more than a sister—she was a pillar of strength and wisdom, always ready with a helping hand and a warm heart. She treasured her role as an aunt and great-aunt, and her home was always open, her heart always full.

Hildegarde is survived by her siblings Mary, Frances, and Herbert, who will forever cherish the memories of her boundless love, her steadfast faith, and her ever-present smile. She was ever present for her nephew Michael, his wife Gail, and their three children Aidan, Elise and Amalie.
Her family and friends take comfort in knowing that her generous spirit and lasting impact on her community will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Hildegarde’s zest for life was as vibrant as her spirit. If you happen to love gin on the rocks, please lift up a glass in her honor, celebrating a life well-lived and the joy she brought to so many.
