Herbert Walter Hayes, 100, of Sweet Home passed away at his home December 6, 2023. He was born on December 5, 1923 in Austin, Minnesota to Robert Lincoln and Florence Bertha (Bergman) Hayes. He lived in Austin most of his life, moving to Oregon around 1972.

He served in the Navy from July 1943 to April 1946. Herbert was a Radarman on the USS Wenatchee. He took big ships into Japan for the signing of the treaty.

He worked at the Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota, retiring at the age of 48. Herbert moved to Sweet Home around 1972 and passed away at his home at the age of 100.

Herbert loved gardening in his orchards, traveling the back roads to the mountains, being on his computer, and most of all watching, “Judge Judy.”
