With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bonnie Sue Woody, our devoted and quirky wife and mother. She left us June 16, 2021 while sleeping peacefully at her residence in Sweet Home, Oregon. She was in her 79th year.
Born in the coal mining town of Marting, West Virginia to the late Brady and Sue (Cook) Fleming, she was proud of her heritage and would regale us with stories of life in the “holler” with her parents, two brothers and sister. To fulfill her sense of adventure, she joined the Navy in 1961, and lived and raised a family in multiple states, including California, Texas, and her final stop, Sweet Home, Oregon. If you saw her about town, walking by the lake or on her bike, she was wearing her statement piece, one of her personally embellished hats.
She was a passionate genealogist and quilter. She spent countless hours exploring historical records in local libraries and incorporating research into her travels. She left us with a rich set of records and artifacts to be passed onto future generations. As a quilter, she created many beautiful quilts that we continue to cherish and use every day.
Out of all her accomplishments in life, she probably was most proud of raising her two sons. She left us with many fond memories of bedtime readings of Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and, oddly enough, Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are memories of camping trips where she shared with us her wonder of the natural world. She taught us to cook with an emphasis on improvisation and making do with what was on hand. In the end, she taught us to love the simple things.
We will miss the funky hats, her provocative and unique outlook on life and the universe. We will miss her generosity, kindness and most of all her love.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Delbert Woody of Sweet Home; her sons, Daniel Carr (Janet) of Lake Oswego and Aaron Carr of Sweet Home; her grandson, Alexander Carr of Portland; her brothers, Lloyd (Noreen) and Douglas (Sharon) Fleming of Florence KY; and multiple in-laws, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Webb; and the father of her sons, David Carr.
At her request, no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Parkinson’s Foundation (michaeljfox.org/donate).
