Betty Loretta Brown, 88, of Sweet Home passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014. She was born in Myrtle Point to Raymond and Nancy “Laura” (Holtsclaw) Smith. She grew up in Glendale. She graduated from Canyonville High School, was Valedictorian of her class, and was a champion speller.

Betty married Claude W. Brown October 1, 1945. They moved to Sweet Home and raised four children.

Betty enjoyed traveling by car, doing crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and feeding and watching birds, especially her humming birds. She liked shopping, reading, gardening, and listening to the rain. Betty loved spending time with family, especially during the holidays, and taking numerous pictures whenever they were all together. She loved the Oregon coast, even when it was stormy.

Betty was liked by all who knew her. Betty will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

She is survived by: her son, Steve, and his wife, Kathy Brown, of Sweet Home; daughter, Gayle, and her husband, Scott Adams, of Sweet Home; son-in-law, Richard Latch (lifelong parter of Jerry), of Des Moines, Iowa; sister, Alonia Smith, of Lebanon; brother, Gene Smith, of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Jeremy Brown-Gourley, Chad Brown, Rachael Hicks, Heather Pollock, and Anthony Rose; and great grandchildren, Cole, Brooklyn, Kiana, Ellie, and Tegan. Betty also loved her grand dogs.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 1962 and her two oldest sons, Jerry C. Brown of Des Moines, Iowa in 1998 and Richard A. Brown of Lebanon in 1984.

A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 30, 2014 at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home.
